Introduction

Dr. Diana Pacheco is a design thinker, social innovation strategist, and community-engaged researcher. Her expertise lies in curriculum development, educational product design, and online learning environments, particularly immersive 3D technology. As the Director of Learning Design and Research at Conectado Inc., Dr. Pacheco leads initiatives to create innovative learning experiences that empower individuals and communities. She is dedicated to establishing research-practice partnerships and implementing design-based methodologies to transform educational environments positively.

The Love of Education

I was first drawn to education because of the profound impact it had on my parents’ lives. Coming from low-income families, they both experienced firsthand how education can serve as a powerful tool for socioeconomic mobility. Through their hard work and dedication, education transformed their circumstances and opened doors to opportunities they never imagined. They always emphasized how crucial education was in shaping their futures, and their stories had a deep impact on me. I developed a strong belief that education could change lives, as I had seen it firsthand in their experiences. This realization sparked my fascination with the transformative potential of education, and I became passionate about becoming a teacher. I pursued this path by attending college to become a high school teacher, and later, I completed a PhD in education, focusing on curriculum development and design thinking. My goal has always been to bridge the gap between research and educational practice to create impactful learning experiences for all students.

Inspiration

I was inspired to pursue my doctoral studies because I wanted to be trained in a way that would allow me to tackle problems from both a theoretical and research-informed standpoint. I sought to understand and analyze challenges in a rigorous manner, while also finding creative ways to address them. The training I received truly equipped me to approach problems critically, combining theoretical knowledge with practical insight. It also allowed me to integrate my own background and experiences, using them to design learning environments that can improve individuals’ lives. Ultimately, it gave me the tools to make informed decisions and take a more impactful approach to the challenges I encounter.

Motivation

What motivates me to continue my journey is the incredible impact a human-centered and theoretically informed curriculum and interventions can have on individuals. Seeing how these approaches truly transform lives is incredibly rewarding and drives me to keep pushing forward. I also have a deep passion for continuous learning as a professional; nurturing my curiosity allows me to grow and refine my skills. Creating interventions that improve people’s lives and contribute to their success gives me a sense of purpose and fulfillment, and it’s this commitment to making a positive difference keeps me motivated every day.

The Journey

I was born and raised in Honduras in a loving nuclear family, surrounded by a joyful and kind extended family. Growing up, I had strong support systems, many friends, and an unwavering desire to become the best version of myself. Education was central to that journey, guiding me toward self-improvement and personal growth.

Honduras

Becoming a teacher was not only central to my journey, but it also felt like a calling tied to my purpose in life: using education to improve the lives of others. Throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege of contributing to the educational journeys of many individuals, and the impact I’ve been able to make on their lives has been deeply rewarding. This sense of purpose has made my journey both worthwhile and fulfilling, and it continues to motivate me as I seek to shape a better future for those I work with.

Dr. Pacheco’s Advice

Education is an amazing field but requires a deep passion for the work. It’s not always easy, but the rewards are truly worth it. Develop a critical eye for how we approach education and the systems that shape individuals’ learning experiences. We must question and evaluate these systems to ensure they serve everyone effectively. The ability to think critically about education helps us create environments that genuinely benefit learners and impact their lives.
