Introduction

June 23 marks a significant day in the calendar for engineers and advocates of gender equality around the globe—International Women in Engineering Day (INWED). This day is dedicated to celebrating the remarkable achievements of women in the engineering sector and inspiring the next generation of female engineers. As we observe International Women in Engineering Day on June 23, 2024, it’s essential to look back at its history and acknowledge women’s ongoing contributions in this pivotal field.

The Origins of International Women in Engineering Day

International Women in Engineering Day was established in the United Kingdom in 2014 by the Women’s Engineering Society (WES). The society was founded in 1919, shortly after World War I, to support women who had entered the engineering profession during the war and wished to continue their careers in this field. INWED initially aimed to highlight the accomplishments of female engineers in the UK, but its impact quickly transcended national borders.

By 2017, INWED had gained international recognition, and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) supported its global outreach. The day now serves as a platform to raise awareness about women’s underrepresentation in engineering and promote gender diversity within the industry.

Why International Women in Engineering Day Matters

Engineering is a critical field that drives innovation and solves complex problems across various sectors, including technology, infrastructure, healthcare, and environmental sustainability. Despite its importance, engineering has historically been a male-dominated profession. Women still need to be represented in engineering roles worldwide, making up only 15-20% of the engineering workforce in many countries.

International Women in Engineering Day addresses this disparity by:

– Highlighting Role Models: Showcasing the achievements of female engineers provides inspiration and tangible role models for young women and girls considering careers in engineering.

– Promoting Gender Diversity: Emphasizing the importance of diverse perspectives in engineering teams can lead to more innovative solutions and inclusive work environments.

– Encouraging Education and Careers in STEM: Initiatives and events associated with INWED encourage girls to pursue education and careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

Celebrating INWED 2024

This year’s theme, “Engineering for a Sustainable Future,” focuses on the role of women engineers in tackling global challenges such as climate change, renewable energy, and sustainable development. Women engineers are at the forefront of developing solutions that address immediate technical problems and contribute to long-term sustainability goals.

Key Events and Highlights

1. Virtual Conferences and Webinars: Many organizations and institutions are hosting online events featuring prominent female engineers who will share their insights and experiences. These events offer a platform for networking, learning, and discussion on the latest advancements in engineering.

2.Social Media Campaigns: Social media platforms are buzzing with stories, interviews, and profiles of women engineers from various disciplines.Hashtags like #INWED2024, #INWED24, #WomenInEngineering, #Enhancedbyengineering, and #EngineeringHeroes are trending, amplifying women’s voices in the field.

3. Educational Workshops: Schools and universities organized workshops and hands-on activities to spark interest in engineering among young girls. These initiatives aim to demonstrate the exciting possibilities that a career in engineering can offer.

4. Industry Awards and Recognitions: Various engineering societies and organizations recognize outstanding women engineers’ contributions through awards and honors. These accolades not only celebrate individual achievements but also highlight the collective progress of women in engineering.

Inspiring Stories of Women Engineers

– Dr. Ayanna Howard: As the first female dean of engineering at Ohio State University, Dr. Howard has made significant contributions to the field of robotics and AI. Her work in assistive robotics is transforming lives by enhancing the independence of individuals with disabilities.

– Dr. Mae Jemison: The first African-American woman to travel in space, Dr. Jemison’s background in chemical engineering and her achievements as an astronaut continue to inspire countless young women to pursue careers in engineering and space exploration.

– Gitanjali Rao: At just 15 years old, Gitanjali was named Time’s Kid of the Year in 2020 for her innovative solutions to global challenges, including a device for detecting lead in drinking water and an app to prevent cyberbullying. Her passion for engineering showcases the potential of young innovators.

Conclusion

International Women in Engineering Day is more than just a celebration—it is a call to action. As we honor the women who have made significant strides in engineering, we must also commit to supporting and encouraging the next generation of female engineers. We can ensure a sustainable and innovative future by fostering an inclusive and diverse engineering community.

Happy International Women in Engineering Day 2024! Let’s continue to break barriers, innovate, and inspire together.
