The Life, Music and Legacy of an American Original

Few entertainers become true cultural icons. Dolly Parton was one of them.

From a childhood in the mountains of East Tennessee, Parton built an extraordinary career as a singer, songwriter, actress, author, entrepreneur, and philanthropist.

Her unmistakable voice, rhinestone-covered style, humor, and generosity made her beloved far beyond country music. Following her death on August 25, 2026, at age 80, the world is remembering not only the music Dolly created, but also the remarkable life and legacy she leaves behind.

From Tennessee to Music History

Born January 19, 1946, Dolly Rebecca Parton was one of 12 children. Her humble upbringing became an important part of her songwriting, most famously inspiring “Coat of Many Colors.”

After moving to Nashville, her career took off when she joined The Porter Wagoner Show in 1967. When she eventually decided to pursue her own career, she wrote “I Will Always Love You” as a farewell to Wagoner.

The song became a No. 1 country hit for Dolly and later a worldwide phenomenon when Whitney Houston recorded it for The Bodyguard.

Parton went on to create an extraordinary catalog that included “Jolene,” “9 to 5,” “Here You Come Again,” “My Tennessee Mountain Home,” and “Islands in the Stream” with Kenny Rogers.

Dolly the Author

Dolly’s storytelling also extended to books.

Songteller: My Life in Lyrics explored the stories behind her songs, while Behind the Seams: My Life in Rhinestonesopened her remarkable fashion archive to readers.

She collaborated with bestselling author James Patterson on the novel Run, Rose, Run and joined her sister Rachel Parton George for the cookbook Good Lookin’ Cookin’. In 2025, she published Star of the Show: My Life on Stage, a photographic retrospective documenting her decades as a performer. Together, her books preserved another side of Dolly — the songwriter, storyteller, style icon, performer, and woman behind the rhinestones.

A Legacy Beyond Entertainment

One of Dolly’s greatest achievements happened far beyond a concert stage.

In 1995, she launched Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library to provide books to young children. What began in her Tennessee home county grew into an international literacy initiative that distributed hundreds of millions of books.

She also turned her connection to the Smoky Mountains into an enduring business legacy through Dollywood, while expanding into hospitality, publishing, merchandise, food and other ventures.

Dolly proved that a woman could embrace glamour, humor, and femininity while also becoming a formidable songwriter, entrepreneur, and philanthropist.

Memorable Dolly Moments

There are almost too many to choose from: writing “I Will Always Love You” after leaving Porter Wagoner; turning “Jolene” into one of country music’s most recognizable songs; starring alongside Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin in 9 to 5; recording “Islands in the Stream” with Kenny Rogers; launching Dollywood and the Imagination Library; returning to the road with Pure & Simple at 70; entering the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame; and captivating another generation with her 2023 Thanksgiving performance.

Each represented a different part of Dolly — songwriter, performer, actress, businesswoman, philanthropist, and cultural icon.

Past. Present. Future. Forever Dolly.

The Future: Forever Dolly

One of Dolly’s final major creative projects will help carry her story forward.

DOLLY: A True Original Musical is scheduled to begin Broadway previews in December 2026, with its official opening planned for January 19, 2027 — what would have been her 81st birthday.

The musical tells her story through classics including “Jolene,” “Coat of Many Colors,” “9 to 5,” and “I Will Always Love You,” along with new music Dolly wrote for the production.

It is a fitting continuation for a woman whose childhood dreams ultimately carried her from Tennessee to stages around the world.

Dolly Parton’s legacy, however, will extend far beyond Broadway.

It lives in the songwriter discovering “Jolene” for the first time. In the child receiving an Imagination Library book. In the entrepreneur inspired by the empire she created without abandoning her roots. And in generations who will continue singing the songs she left behind.

Behind the wigs, rhinestones, and humor was a woman who knew exactly who she was — and understood the value of remaining herself.

The tours may be over.

The music, stories, books, generosity, and legacy remain.
