Women Biz Works (2025, April 6). Kirsty Coventry Becomes First Female IOC President in History
In a landmark moment for global sports, Kirsty Coventry of Zimbabwe was elected president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The decision was made during the 144th IOC Session in Costa Navarino, Greece, following a single round of voting.
Coventry, a decorated Olympian with seven swimming medals, stood out among a strong group of candidates, including HRH Prince Feisal Al Hussein, David Lappartient, and Lord Sebastian Coe. But her vision, legacy, and voice for change won the hearts and votes of the IOC members.
“The young girl who first started swimming in Zimbabwe all those years ago could never have dreamt of this moment,” Coventry shared. “Glass ceilings have been shattered today.”
She is the first woman to take the helm of the IOC, breaking through a historically male-dominated institution and setting a precedent for leadership in sports governance.
Her priorities? Unity, innovation, and opportunity for all. She emphasized the unmatched power of sport to uplift communities and vowed to continue fostering the Olympic values of friendship, excellence, and respect.
Outgoing President Thomas Bach congratulated her, calling it a bright day for the future of the Olympic Movement.
Kirsty’s journey reminds us all: women can lead from anywhere—from swimming lanes to boardrooms and now, at the highest level of international sport.
Let’s celebrate this historic win for Coventry and every girl who dares to dream.
